How to Read the Nutrition Facts Label

Part of maintaining a healthy diet is to really understand what you are eating. To do that, you need to understand how to read and comprehend the nutrition facts on all of the cans, boxes, wraps, and other packaging your food comes in. As a college student, this most likely comprises 95% of the food you buy. The following information is to be used to make informed decisions and healthy choices when choosing the food to buy/eat.

We will start from the top and make our way down. The first bit of information we see is the number of servings in the package and the number of servings per container. For a box of mac and cheese, the serving size is 1 cup and the servings per container are 2. This means that for each nutrient value below it, it is referring to the one cup serving size. If we wanted to know how much of something was in the whole package we would have to multiply it by two because there are 2 servings in the entire package. Be sure to keep this in mind as you read the rest of the nutrition facts and apply them to how much you plan on actually eating.

This can be tricky sometimes, especially with junk food like potato chips or cookies. The nutrition facts will give you a certain number of calories which might not seem too bad but when you look at the serving size, it could be close to four chips or a couple cookies. This means you’d have to multiply the calories by the number of servings you’ve eaten which can add up quickly because people rarely open a bag of chips just to eat four.

    The Key to Glowing Skin

If you have a skin ailment of sorts… whether it is a pimple, a wart, a blemish, a scar, eczema, a cyst or a skin growth… one of the most important elements in the body is silicon.

Now resist the temptation to rush out to the natural store and look for silicon supplements!

Instead look to nature… because obviously the body needs a balance of these elements…. besides silicon, the skin also needs zinc, and selenium and vitamin C and E and so forth. And it needs it in all the right combinations and ratios…Silicon is also needed for vitamin B to be absorbed into our system.

Melanie, a friend of mine, just had a problem with ringworm. Ringworm is not dangerous, but it is a problem that irritates and keeps you scratching and that further destroys the skin. Ringworm is also an ailment that can spread to different parts of your body if you are not careful about washing your hands after scratching the ringworm. It can really be a problem that exacerbates. So she applied some topical ointment over the skin and then she included oats, barley, dried apricots, figs, millet, wheat germ (these are foods highest in levels of silicon) in her breakfast every day and that resolved the problem.

Many of us are blindly taking Vitamin B supplements every day not realizing that without silicon in the diet, it will not be absorbed and it will be wasted away in your elimination process. Imagine all that (sometimes expensive) supplements of Vitamin B going down your toilet bowl! And for some of you who are not good at swallowing these pills/capsules, or who hate swallowing them in the first place…imagine all your effort wasted!

How to Use Essential Oils and Aromatherapy for Diffuser and Inhaling

You have your essential oils and know they are natural remedies, effective and safe for health and healing. You have a headache, now – what do you do?

Essential oils (E.O.’s) are easy to use. Open the bottle, get a drop or two and use it. That’s it. Not the answer you’re looking for? Let’s expand on it a bit.

There are many application methods for therapeutic healing with E.O.’s. The method you chose is dependent upon the condition being treated, and in some cases, the E.O.’s being used.

    The three main categories are:

    Inhaling
    Topical
    Internal

    Inhaling Essential Oils

E.O.’s are quite effective when inhaled. This method is best for, but not limited to, emotional conditions like stress, anxiety and depression, respiratory ailments, headaches, migraine, colds, flu, sinus congestion, and to enjoy the natural perfume like fragrance. Methods used to inhale oils include:

Diffuser: There are several different diffusers designed to disperse the essential oils into the atmosphere. You can also add E.O.’s to a bowl of steaming water and inhale – be very careful not to let the fumes go into the eyes as this can be very irritating with some oils.

Evaporation: Drop some essential oils on a tissue or cloth and either inhale directly or place nearby. This is a good system for insomnia or difficulty sleeping. Evaporation method can include simply sniffing from the bottle.

Spray: Adding about 15 drops of E.O.’s per ounce of water in a spray bottle is an ideal way to create a room fragrance or deodorizer. Be sure to shake the bottle before spraying

Putz Method: Place a drop of E. O. onto a 2″ square tissue, roll it up a place it into the nostril for a few minutes. Repeat with other nostril. This is great for headache, sinus and respiratory issues.

    The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage

After many years of time and study, researchers have investigated the possible emotional, physical and medical benefits of therapeutic massage. This study has been going on since the 1800s and only recently have their been substantial and legitimate findings. The truth is that therapeutic massage has many beneficial qualities within the daily life of all people. Researchers now stand by therapeutic massage and its advantages to the human body and mind.

    Anxiety and Stress Relief

Therapeutic therapy has always been said to be a great anxiety and stress reliever. Now, according to the AMTA or American Massage Therapy Association, therapeutic therapy has the ability to relax the mind, relieve stress and improve a humans ability to recognize and monitor their stress signals. In addition, therapeutic therapy also helps to reduce anxiety, improves mental alertness and increases the mind and body connection. Studies were performed on medical students and was discovered that after a therapeutic therapy was administered these students responded cautiously to stress signals and had a decreased rate of anxiety. Remarkably, therapeutic therapy was also found beneficial to cancer patients after successfully reducing their anxiety levels as well.

    Attention and Focus

Additional research found that when therapeutic massages were given to already stressed office workers they were able to perform better in the workplace more so than those who were not given a massage. Persons who were given regular massages were far more alert and experienced less stress than persons who went without a massage. Research was also performed on several autistic children who showed reduced erratic behaviour after a therapeutic massage. Erratic behaviour is very common in autistic individuals.
